Samsung has introduced their first solar-powered phone, an inexpensive device targeted at emerging markets. The dual-band (900/1800MHz) GSM E1107 “Crest” includes a normal 800 mAh battery that is charged normally and a large solar panel which provides 5-10 minutes of talk time for each hour it is exposed to the sun.

In areas where stable electric outlets are scarce, carrying this phone makes a lot of sense. Leaving it in a sunny window all the time would eliminate the need to charge the device.

Samsung’s 鈥淢obile Tracker鈥?sends an alert if the SIM is swapped and also has an emergency message capability. A feature that blocks calls outside of those important enough to answer while busy, a fake call feature for an easy out of those awkward situations and a prayer-reminder alert system are among the phone’s features which will vary depending on local market.
